Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College volleyball team (5-3, 1-1 ODAC) fought hard against No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan University (13-0, 2-0 ODAC) on Friday night inside Ragan-Brown Field House, claiming the second set before falling 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 25-14, 25-21) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Quakers were led by
Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.), who posted a game-high six blocks, and
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico), who registered 12 kills.
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) directed the offense with 29 assists, while defensively,
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.),
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), and
Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.) each tallied 11 digs.
Virginia Wesleyan was fueled by Hannah Smith, who delivered 21 kills and 19 digs for a double-double. Skylar Rivers anchored the defense with 23 digs, while Breana Brooks contributed nine kills and five blocks at the net.
After dropping the opening frame, the Quakers responded in the second. Strong serving helped Guilford build a cushion midway through the set, with Alcantara powering the attack for five kills and Duvall adding a pair of blocks at the net. Virginia Wesleyan threatened late, but the Quakers held firm to take the set, 25-20, and even the match at one apiece.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle before the Marlins pulled away late behind five kills each from Smith and Maddie Thompson. Virginia Wesleyan carried that momentum into the fourth, closing out the match for the 3-1 victory.
The Quakers return to Jack Jensen Court tomorrow, Saturday, September 20th, for another conference matchup versus the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College at 11:00 A.M.
