GREENSBORO, N.C. - Exploding for double-digit goals for the first time since the 2009 season, the Guilford College men's soccer team (2-1-0), led by
Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark), blitzed Bluefield University (0-2-0) 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
As a team, the ten Quaker goals are the most since they recorded that same tally on September 4, 2009 against Gallaudet. For Garbia, he racked up a quartet of goals himself, netting GC's first hat trick since Kenny Nzekwe '23 against Methodist University on September 6, 2022, and the first four-score game the program has seen since Nzekwe in 2019 against Emory & Henry.
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) and
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) each saw time in goal for the Quakers but had a low-pressure evening facing no shots on target. Vital-Peraza started and got the win to up his record to 1-1-0. Bluefield's keeper, Canaan Newman, finished with eight saves on a battering 37 shots faced, ending the afternoon with the loss, moving his record to 0-2-0.
Garbia led the strong offensive performance for the Quakers, but had lots of help.
Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) contributed with two goals on seven shot attempts.
Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.) also displayed an effective performance with one goal on a team-high 12 shot attempts in the game.
Juan Soto was the only Ram to muster a shot for Bluefield.
No defensive light was displayed by the Rams as the Quakers started the scoring off early with three goals between the 14th and 17th minutes of play, the first two in the collegiate career of
Jaykob Garbia and one by Issac Garbia that wound up as his second-consecutive game-winner.
Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.) would wrap up the first half with his second career goal in the 39th minute of play from two contributing assists by the Garbia brothers to put Guilford in front 4-0 at the half.
The second half was summed up by the Quakers continuing to get great play from the Garbia brothers, who contributed three more goals to their total, bringing it to six combined in the game.
Frankie Avalos (Thomasville, N.C.) and
Demetrio Candela Habana (Winston-Salem, N.C.) both wrapped this game up with their first goals of the season resulting in the icing on the cake in the impressive offensive performance, winning, 10-0.
The Quakers will be back in action, Saturday, September 6th, just down the road in downtown Greensboro at 1:00 PM to take on Greensboro College at Pride Field.
