FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Guilford College men's tennis team (0-4, 0-0 ODAC) continued its road swing on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Covenant College (4-3, 0-0 CCS) at the Clayton Tennis Center. Despite a standout performance at the top of the singles lineup, the Quakers were unable to overcome a deep Scots squad in the neutral-site matchup.
Covenant took early control of the match by sweeping all three doubles flights to secure the inaugural point.
In singles action,
Andres Mercedes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) provided a major bright spot for the Quakers at the top flight. Mercedes turned in a clinical performance, earning Guilford's lone point of the day with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 straight-sets victory over Ben Onufrock.
Emmanuel Oye (Clayton, N.C.),
George Hardie (Liberty, N.C.),
Alex Brown (Burlington, N.C.),
Turner Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.), and
Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) all put up determined efforts in their respective singles matches against a veteran Covenant lineup.
The Quakers remain in Fayetteville for their next matchup tomorrow, Sunday, March 1st, when they will take on the Monarchs of Methodist University. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
