Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (11/1/06) -- Second-seeded Guilford defeated third seed Eastern Mennonite in a penalty shootout Wednesday to advance to its second consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament final. The Quakers move their record to 13-5-3, while Eastern Mennonite's mark goes to 13-4-1.
After 110 minutes without a goal, Eastern Mennonite's Joy Shaiebly, Katie Lamm, Aubrey Bauman and Valerie Burton converted their spot-kicks in the shootout. Guilford's Micki Boulineau, Morgan Jones, Amanda Sperr and Jennah Carter were successful as well in the first four rounds of the shootout. In the final round of the shootout, Guilford goalie Veronica Zych (below) dived to her right to save the attempt of Eastern Mennonite's Lindsey Snyder. Then, senior tri-captain Emily Ott (left) converted her penalty to send the Quakers through to the ODAC final.
The Quakers also defeated the Royals in a shootout in last year's ODAC Tournament quarterfinals, with Ott converting the winning penalty.
The Quakers, as the highest remaining seed, are now set to host their first ODAC championship game in school history on Saturday, November 4 on Haworth Field at 2:00 pm against Virginia Wesleyan. The fourth seeded Marlins downed previously unbeaten Washington and Lee, 1-0, in the other ODAC semifinal match. The Quakers defeated the Marlins earlier this year, 2-1 in overtime, on September 16 and also handed Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 defeat in the 2005 ODAC semifinals.
