Box Score Sweet Briar, Va. (4/11/07) -- Mary Hutchins scored four goals and an assist to lead visiting Guilford College past Sweet Briar College, 16-8, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse match Wednesday.
The victory secured a berth in the ODAC Tournament for the Quakers (7-7, 4-3 ODAC) and marked their sixth win in eight matches.
Guilford broke open a 3-2 game with a 4-0 run midway through the opening period of the rainy game. Hutchins netted her first two goals of the game during the run, which opened a 7-2 Quakers' lead with 7:06 left in the half. Sweet Briar's (3-10, 1-5 ODAC) Meredith Newman and Julie Sellers closed out the first-half scoring and made it a 7-4 game at the break.
Kelly Gonzalez opened and closed a 5-0 Guilford run at the start of the second half that effectively put the game away. She was one of Guilford's five multiple-goal scorers. Jordan Clodfelter scored three goals and an assist. Teammates Caryn Washington and Allison Brown scored three goals apiece.
Sellers' four scores shared game-high scoring honors with Hutchins. Newman added three scores for the Vixens. Sweet Briar goalie Emily Fitzpatrick made 14 saves in goal.
The Quakers close out their ODAC season at home this Saturday (4/14) afternoon against league-leading Washington and Lee. The Vixens visit Bridgewater Saturday (4/14) at 1:00 p.m.
