GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team featured five players who were selected to the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, as
Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine),
Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.),
Natalia Rubio (Greensboro, N.C.),
Leyla Strong (Concord, N.C.), and
Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) were on the squad, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Lacrosse is a sport that falls under the CSC's at-large program for Academic All-District recognition. In order to qualify for the honor in lacrosse, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, a nominee must have competed in 90% of the team's total games played, or start in 66% of the team's total games. No more than ten student-athletes may be an at-large nominee per school per gender.
Already accruing some accolades to go on her mantle this spring, becoming the first Quaker selected all-conference in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) since 2019, making the All-ODAC Second Team, Hartnett concluded her standout career with another terrific campaign for women's lacrosse and now secures her second Academic All-District accolade. Appearing in all-but-one of the team's 17 contests, including 15 starts, Hartnett was a one-woman engine that made the GC offense go. Pacing the team in points, goals, and assists, with 71 on 43 scores and 28 helpers, the graduate student was a dynamic and balanced threat within the Guilford attack. She also made an impact defensively, causing 28 turnovers, the most on the team, while scooping 39 groundballs, the most among field players. Nationally, Hartnett finished the season within the top-200 in Division-III Women's Lacrosse in total assists, assists per game, caused turnovers per game, free position percentage, points, points per game, and shots on goal per game. Finishing her undergraduate degree in Sports Management with a 3.52 GPA, Harnett played this season while studying in the Masters of International Sports Management program, posting a 4.00 GPA.
With the team experiencing early-season troubles in net, Keene slid into the goalkeeper role in the fourth game of the year and started in frame from there on out. Starting in 16 games overall, Keene appeared in 14 contests in goal with 13 starts, providing stability on the backend along the way. Over 829 minutes and change, she recorded a 14.04 goals against average, but her value is more shown in her .452 save percentage that ranked third in the ODAC and 83
rd in the nation, as well as her 160 saves and 10.0 saves per game, both of which were the second-most in the league and top-40 marks nationally. For her efforts, Keene possessed a 4-9 record in goal. The sophomore also had one goal and one assist during her time on offense. Academically, she owns a 3.90 GPA in the Sport Management program.
The second of two second-time Academic All-District honorees, Rubio gets the honor as the Quakers holdover on defense from last season, having a successful junior campaign. Starting in all 17 Guilford games this spring, she caused ten turnovers on the GC backline. Rubio also corralled 15 groundballs and a pair of draw controls this season. When venturing into the offensive zone, she contributed a pair of goals on four shot attempts. Off the field, she is in the Guilford Sports Management program and boasts a 3.63 GPA.
A dual-sport athlete, Strong finished her first season on the Quakers lacrosse team this spring, but qualifies since she is an athletic junior for her three years spent on the women's soccer squad. One of just five players to start all 17 games for the Quakers, Strong had a solid first season of collegiate lacrosse. Causing eight turnovers and scooping nine groundballs, she was a productive piece of the GC defense. In addition, the junior contributed one assist on offense. Strong is studying Health Sciences and Exercise and Sport Sciences at Guilford, owning a 3.75 GPA.
Another player that started all 17 games for the Quakers, Wood is the second sophomore honoree for Guilford and the selection is well-earned after a season that saw her breakout within the GC offense. Owning the second-best shot on goal percentage among Quakers with at least ten shot attempts this season, she was efficient with her looks, nearly doubling her goal total from her freshman season, with 17, and adding three assists. Wood also added 16 groundballs, seven caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Off the field, Wood studies Accounting and possesses a 3.94 GPA.
