Guilford Defeats Cross-Town Rival Greensboro, 12-8

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. (4/18/07) -- Freshman Jessica Bolton made a career-high 14 saves in Guilford College's 12-8 lacrosse win over visiting Greensboro College Wednesday in the Quakers' regular-season finale. Guilford's third straight win over its crosstown rival evens its record at 8-8, matching the squad's most wins since 1999.

Freshman Carrie Ernst scored two of her game-high three goals to help Guilford outscore its guests, 6-2, in the decisive second half. Jennifer Donah pulled the Pride (10-6) to within 8-7 with 21:56 left in the game, but Guilford's Mary Hutchins won the ensuing draw and carried it directly to the back of the net for a 9-7 Quakers' lead just 13 seconds later.

Guilford won seven of nine second-half draw controls, which helped the Quakers' control possession in the second half. On offense, the Quakers patiently passed the ball around the perimeter with Greensboro chasing them down trying to force a turnover. Guilford junior Kelly Gonzalez scored both of her goals within a 35-second span at the 10-minute mark, which closed the game's scoring.

While Guilford ran the clock down on offense, it was Bolton's seven second-half saves that kept Greensboro off the board. With Guilford holding a 10-8 lead, Bolton stopped Greensboro's Megan Barbieri's free-position shot with 13:44 remaining and made back-to-back stops on Jenna Gast and Caroline Young with eight minutes left to preserve the Quakers' 12-8 edge. Gast's free-position tally with 19:36 left in the game marked Greensboro's final score.

Ernst's four points (3 goals, 1 assist) led all scorers. Junior Caryn Washington scored twice to join Ernst and Gonzalez as Guilford's multiple-goal scorers. Gast and Monika Hulcher scored twice for Greensboro. Senior goalie Kirsten McGuire made 10 stops. Barbieri scooped up six ground balls and five draw controls, both game highs.

The Quakers' next game will be in next week's Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Pride concludes its season at Roanoke Saturday (4/21) at noon.
